A New Era of Autonomous Eye Care

A New Era of Autonomous Eye Care

In August 2025, Eyoto will introduce a transformative advancement in ophthalmic diagnostics: Auto-Optometry™. A ground-breaking release available to all new and existing Aetheia systems.

This innovation represents a major leap forward, offering practitioners the ability to conduct fully automated eye examinations at the touch of a button.

Whether they are in the room or working remotely, clinicians will benefit from enhanced efficiency, precision, and consistency. With this upgrade, Aetheia becomes more than a diagnostic device. It becomes a trusted partner in modern clinical care.

This release marks a historic milestone in the global evolution of eye care.

Aetheia is already recognised as the world’s first fully remote controlled digital slit lamp and the gold standard by which all other remote eye care methods are compared, enabling clinicians to conduct live examinations from any location.

Now, it stands alone as the world’s only digital slit lamp capable of autonomously performing comprehensive eye exams. Launching with two core procedures, a full corneal sweep and a gross eye examination, Aetheia captures every moment in crystal clear 4K, offering both clinical rigour and unprecedented efficiency. Each procedure can be performed on a single eye, or automatically across both eyes in sequence, without any further interaction required from the operator. This delivers consistent, high quality results every time.

With the click of a button by a local technician, these procedures are recorded and captured for storage on the patient’s record, or for immediate viewing by a remote eye care professional.

Auto-Optometry™ signals a pivotal moment in the story of optometry and ophthalmology. For the first time, examinations that traditionally required direct manual operation can now be completed with precision, and repeatability through automation. This launch redefines what is possible in patient care, expands access to expert diagnostics on a global scale, and sets a new benchmark for the future of digital eye health.

Aetheia is not just leading the field, it is reshaping it.

How does it work?

Aetheia's automated procedures are designed to offer seamless integration into both in-clinic and remote diagnostic workflows. With a single click of a button, either the technician physically present with the patient or the optometrist operating remotely can initiate the selected procedure, choosing a corneal sweep or a gross eye examination.

This functionality ensures operational efficiency and consistency across diverse clinical environments, particularly beneficial for distributed practices or tele-ophthalmology settings. Once activated, the system automatically aligns, focuses, and begins the examination, eliminating the need for manual adjustments and thereby reducing variability in image acquisition.

The examination process captures both eyes in sequence, using advanced imaging protocols tailored to the selected procedure. Aetheia records the entire process in high-resolution 4K video, preserving every detail for post examination review, documentation, or training purposes.

This high-definition visual record not only enhances diagnostic confidence but also supports compliance with clinical governance and record-keeping standards. The automation ensures minimal disruption to patient flow while maintaining a high standard of care and data quality, regardless of the clinician’s physical location.

Auto Focus

The first video demonstrates Aetheia’s auto-focusing capability in real time. Upon initiation, the system intelligently detects the the corneal reflex and rapidly adjusts the focal plane to achieve precise clarity. This ensures optimal imaging without the need for manual intervention, significantly reducing technician or clinician workload and enhancing consistency across examinations.

Automated Pupil Location & Centring

In the second video, Aetheia performs automatic centring on the pupil. The system identifies the the corneal reflex and dynamically adjusts both camera orientation and alignment to centre the eye perfectly within the frame. This process is  completed swiftly and accurately, ensuring that subsequent scans are based on a correctly aligned visual axis, which is critical for reproducible clinical results.

Automated Full Corneal Sweep

This fourth video demonstrates a fully automated gross eye examination. The procedure begins with the system aligning itself to the patient's eye position, automatically adjusting the camera angle, illumination, and slit lamp configuration. Within seconds, the Aetheia performs a comprehensive external inspection of the eye, capturing high-definition 4K video that details eyelid position, scleral appearance, conjunctival condition, and corneal clarity.

Automated Gross Eye Examination

The first video demonstrates Aetheia’s auto-focusing capability in real time. Upon initiation, the system intelligently detects the the corneal reflex and rapidly adjusts the focal plane to achieve precise clarity. This ensures optimal imaging without the need for manual intervention, significantly reducing technician or clinician workload and enhancing consistency across examinations.

The final video shows the corneal sweep recording, with an overview of the actual patient at the device while the automated scan is being completed, showing the automated camera and slit lamp movements, and local screen output.

Introducing Eyoto's Auto-Assist™

We are pleased to introduce Auto Assist™: a transformative new feature designed to enhance clinical efficiency and precision.

Auto-Assist™ automatically configures key slit lamp settings including camera angles, lamp brightness, and slit height and width, as well as optimal positioning, all tailored to the specific procedure. By removing the need for manual setup, clinicians can immediately focus on patient examination and treatment, saving valuable time while ensuring consistency and comfort. This innovation supports streamlined workflows for when an auto Optometry™ procedure isn't enough, it reduces setup variability, and promotes greater ease of use across all skill levels within the ophthalmic team.

Auto-Assist™ will:

Instantly position the camera and light source for optimal visualisation, eliminating manual adjustments

Automatically configure slit lamp settings, including height, width, and brightness, based on pre-set clinical protocols

Reduce setup time, allowing clinicians to focus on the examination not the set up

Enhance procedural efficiency by ensuring consistent starting conditions for every patient

Improve ergonomics and workflow for remote clinicians, enabling precise and uninterrupted control
