How does it work?

With a single click of a button, either the technician physically present with the patient or the optometrist operating remotely can initiate the selected procedure, choosing a corneal sweep or a gross eye examination.

What's Being Released?

Autonomous Procedures

Aetheia’s Auto-Optometry™ introduces a world-first in autonomous procedures, delivering automated eye examinations with no manual input required. This release marks a significant milestone in the evolution of ophthalmic care, giving clinicians access to intelligent, repeatable procedures that enhance workflow efficiency, diagnostic consistency, and patient accessibility.

The following automated procedures are included in this release, and can be conducted for just one eye, or both eyes:

1. Corneal Sweep

Total procedure time for both eyes: 1 minute 30 seconds

This procedure captures a detailed scan of the entire corneal surface, allowing clinicians to assess clarity, curvature, and the presence of abnormalities such as scars, infiltrates, or oedema.

2. Gross Eye Exam

Total procedure time for both eyes: 2 minutes 10 seconds

This examination provides a wide field overview of the anterior eye, including the lids, lashes, conjunctiva, sclera, cornea, and iris, supporting general ocular health assessments and identifying signs of gross infection, trauma, or pathology.

Auto-Assist™

Launching with seven pre configured examination modes, Auto-Assist™ is designed to streamline clinical workflow and enhance examination precision. Each mode leverages Aetheia’s patent-pending auto-focus and auto-pupil location technologies, ensuring the eye is accurately positioned and brought into perfect, crystal clear focus.

1. Right Eye / Left Eye Select and Centre

Automatically moves to the selected eye, centres the pupil within the field of view, and focuses precisely on the cornea to provide optimal image clarity.

2. Indirect Illumination

Directs the light source at an angle tangential to the structure of interest. This avoids direct reflection and enhances the visualisation of subtle anterior segment details, such as corneal infiltrates, fine stromal opacities, and subtle irregularities.

3. Retro Illumination

Projects light onto a posterior ocular structure, e.g., iris, lens, or retina, allowing the clinician to observe the anterior segment against this reflected light. This is particularly useful for detecting opacities within the cornea or crystalline lens that obscure the retro illuminated reflex.

4. Retro Iris Illumination

Using the reflected red reflex from the fundus as a light source, this technique allows for assessment of crystalline lens transparency and evaluation of iris structural integrity, including the detection of transillumination defects.

5. Sclerotic Scatter

Directing a wide beam of light through the limbus, the total internal reflection within the cornea illuminates stromal irregularities such as oedema, microcysts, and scarring, making them more readily apparent.

6. Specular Reflection

Provides precise alignment of the illumination and observation systems at equal angles of incidence and reflection. This enables detailed examination of the tear film surface, corneal endothelium, and the anterior surface of contact lenses.

7. Van Herick’s Assessment

Places a narrow, parallel beam of light at the temporal limbus, allowing the apparent depth of the anterior chamber, the space between the posterior corneal surface and the anterior iris surface, to be estimated by comparing its width to the thickness of the adjacent corneal section. This aids in the initial evaluation of potential angle closure risk.
